the poetrysheet

whimsy, subversion, bowling

what is the poetrysheet?

Rev. Patrick Dobson, editor and founder

The publication began on March 27, 2001, as a series of original short poems I sent daily to two coworkers at a Kansas City publishing house. Soon, the “pome 4 2-day” became popular among other employees at the publisher, but also outside the company, amassing one hundred forty subscribers.

By the end of May 2001, what was supposed to have been relief from work-time tedium had become a regular publication, gaining a short, but substantial quote to head the poem. Soon, a short thought or fiction began to fill in between the two, and the publication as you see it today was born.

At the thoughtful request of my boss, who said some questioned how I had so much time to put together a daily E-mail publication on the company system and send it out to some three hundred people, the poetrysheet moved to my computer in January 2002. There it remained, despite numerous requests, until November 2003, when the present Web site came to be.

Between work, family, and other writing (which had increased because of the regular discipline of the poetrysheet), the publication reduced in frequency from every workday except holidays and my wife’s birthday (July 16), to two to three times a week.

All along, the subject or poet of the day has had nothing at all to do with the content of that day’s edition. Any connection between the quote, the thought or fiction, and the poem has been purely accidental. Anything without a byline or attribution has always, and will always be written by me, Rev. Patrick Dobson, the editor.

Comments and constructive criticism are always welcome here. Critics who do not have something constructive to offer or who consider themselves poets and authors, but do not bother to submit work to this or other literary publications, are welcome to send their comments to president@whitehouse.gov.

poetrysheet submissions

As with all publications, it is wise before submitting material to understand what kind of material the editor seeks.

For this publication, one of the main criteria are that the material be original and short, and in being short, powerful.

Otherwise, the range of poetry and prose is broad, ranging from humorous to socially and politically critical (without being polemic). Be dynamic, critical, and original in thinking and writing.

All quotes must be pithy, fresh extractions from books, magazines, or newspapers. They must be submitted with a full citation to be considered for publication.

Please look through our archive or read the sheet for a few weeks before submitting material.

Please submit original work here. Your work may be edited for clarity, grammar, and structure. All copyrights are held by those who submit the work, except for publication in the poetrysheet.

In case you missed it, use this link to submit work to the poetrysheet: submission.
